Rumours of Ed Balls’ exit from the Labour Leadership race have been quashed in a blog post by big man himself mysteriously entitled “Why I’m fighting on”. Speaking on Radio 4 today, Michael Gove’s second least favourite man said, “I’m not denying that I’m behind” before adding, “Everyone knows I don’t give up easily.”
The boisterous former Education Minister’s blog post was littered with Brownite (and increasingly aggressive) resonances - “I will fight on”; “land the first blows on this wretched coalition”; “I’m the best person to fight this coalition” - in response to speculation he was to pull out.
The rumour mill went into overdrive overnight after Unite, a union Balls had hoped to gain backing from, decided to plump with Ed Miliband instead by 24 votes to 4, presumably preferring his toothy grin to Balls’ cauliflower ears.
