Another week, another maverick MP deviating from the fragile coalition line. Tory backbencher Nadine Dorries MP has joined Simon Hughes in opposition to Dave’s proposal to end council housing “for life”. The Mid Bedfordshire member told Radio 4’s Today programme today that fixed-term council tenancies will stop many from wanting to “improve their lot”, and thus disincentivising social mobility.
The proposals to reform the housing system were, admittedly, just an offhand remark by Dave at one of his PM Direct roadshow events, but the willingness of backbenchers to criticise Cabinet plans is quite worrying this early in the blossoming administration…
